The most successful tyranny is not the one that uses force to assure uniformity, but the one that removes awareness of other possibilities, that makes it seem inconceivable that other ways are viable, that removes the sense that there is an outside.

London Calling

Looks like the Metropolitan Police were a little overzealous with their trigger fingers once again, as they have released without charges the two brothers whose house was raided by over 250 officers, with one of the men being shot during the arrest.

And this after shooting to death that innoncent Brazillian man to death just under a year ago.

Let's hope that the RCMP and CSIS haven't been taking any lessons from these guys and also that the barbaric law allowing terror certificates gets struck down soon.

CBC Story.

I really don't think that the police service is filled with evil muslim-harrasers that mount huge investigations for no reason. They are people under a lot of pressure to keep the country safe, and what has proved to be the largest threat right now to killing random people is terrorists operating in the shadows trying to keep their plans secret. They will make mistakes sometimes or not obtain the evidence they thought they would.

That guy who was shot on the subway was wearing a winter coat in the summertime, running towards a subway car away from a policeman trying to stop him for some reason (not paying for a ticket I believe). This was about 2 weeks after ~50 people were killed in Subway bombings.

As for security certificates, I don't know what I think. They're used only for non-citizens using evidence that usually comes from foreign intelligence agencies, where if that evidence were ever revealed publicly or in the courts, Canada would get cut off from any future intillgence. If our law enforcement agencies and the justice minister believe the evidence to be compelling, then for Canada's safety we must take them in to custody. However, we can often not deport them because we can't use the evidence to deny them refugee status, and then deporting them would violate UN charters. Do you think we should just let them walk? Also as a note, the supreme court of canada ruled shoretly after sept. 11 that in certain extreme circumstances it would be OK to deport someone to a country where they would likely be tortured. Hmmm.

Brian, the young guys accused of the 7/7 London bombings had bought return train tickets. Don't you find that a little fishy? And why would they choose to blow up London's Arab quarters (Edgware Road)? And why did mysterious men have access to one of the buses for twenty hours prior to the bombing? Did you know that a lot of thinking people believe that those "Muslim Terrorists" were patsies?
